  • What does PMU stand for?
PMU, or Permanent Makeup, is a technique of lightly depositing pigment into the skin, targeting the "sweet spot" between the epidermis and dermis. It creates cosmetic enhancements resembling makeup, such as eyeliner, eyebrow definition, and lip colour. The pigments used in PMU can be organic, inorganic, or hybrid. Your artist should have extensive knowledge of these pigments and colour theory to achieve flawless results.
  • Who should avoid permanent makeup?
While PMU is suitable for many, certain health conditions or medications may make it unsuitable for some individuals. Factors like age, health status, and skin condition can affect eligibility, pigment retention, and healing. Those under 18, pregnant, nursing, or with severe health concerns like pacemakers, lupus, or recent organ transplants are ineligible. Certain medications, compromised immune systems, or skin conditions may also require caution or doctor clearance. To learn more about specific contraindications, medications, and additional considerations, view our full list of Considerations here. .
  • How long does permanent makeup last?
The longevity of PMU depends on how saturated the pigment is in the skin. While higher saturation may last longer, the goal isn’t to over-saturate, as this can lead to uneven fading. Every pigment mix contains various colour components, and some may fade faster than others, potentially leaving undesired tones. Proper pigment selection and application by a skilled artist are crucial to ensure the colour stays true and fades naturally over time. After a couple of years, you can refresh the colour or modify it if needed. Think of it like a cup of water—if it’s too full, there’s no room for adjustments later. Keep in mind that results can vary. Factors like age, diet, stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, overall health, and sun exposure can affect how long your cosmetic tattoo lasts and how it heals. Touch-up sessions may be needed to maintain or refine your desired look.
